The Big Show: Our First Annual Performance at St George’s Theatre

Matinee 1.30pm | Evening 5.00pm

On Saturday 19 September, The Dance Base took to the stage at St George’s Theatre for our very first annual show. After months of ideas, conversations and even asking our students what it should be called, one name kept coming back: The Big Show.

It was the right name. Two performances. More than 60 dancers. Every class hosted by The Dance Base. Special guest collaborations from Josh Flegg Movement and Class With Darci. And a local theatre just a stone’s throw from our studio, chosen because this first show needed to belong to Great Yarmouth.

More than a dance class

We wanted families and relatives in the audience to see something bigger than steps and routines.

We wanted them to feel what being part of The Dance Base really means: friendship, community, confidence, drive, freedom and unity.

St George’s Theatre was the perfect fit. The stage was large enough for our full company to stand together, with enough space backstage for 60+ performers to change throughout the show. Supporting a venue in our own town mattered just as much as putting on a polished production.

The moment that set the tone

The opening video still makes us smile... and it made a lot of people cry.

The VT featured students from The Dance Base and captured the heart of the school in one line:

“We all came here for different reasons, but The Dance Base brought us together.”

It was a surprise for the audience. It was emotional. And it told the truth of the night before a single routine had begun.

From there, the atmosphere was electric. By the end of the evening performance, the standing ovation and the roar that followed brought the house down. For the dancers, that sound was everything — applause aimed at them, and at the people standing beside them.

Families are still talking about it.

First time on a theatre stage

Students had around 12 weeks to prepare.

Around 90% of those who performed were doing so for the first time. Many had never been inside a theatre, let alone danced on one. Even our Ballroom & Latin students who know the competition floor had never felt a theatre stage, or an audience responding only to the people in front of them.

On the night, nerves became confidence. Backstage became teamwork. Children who had only been dancing a few months walked out and delivered. What the audience saw was a showstopping performance. What we saw was a school growing up in public.

A word from our Principal

“A lot of hard work has gone into the production and organisation of this, our very first annual show at The Dance Base. I’d like to thank each and every performer, teacher, chaperone, and volunteer who helped put together an incredible show that truly showed what The Dance Base was all about. Here’s to the next one!”

— Megan Reeves. Principal, The Dance Base.
